?? Meche’s Wednesday start was up in the air because of a dead arm, and he had been ineffective in his previous two outings. The veteran did not throw off the mound Saturday or Sunday at Pittsburgh but had a bullpen session Monday at Kauffman Stadium.

?? All went well.

?? “Gil felt fine,” manager Trey Hillman said. “He said he felt good. He’s going to pitch Wednesday. That’s very good news.”

?? Meche, who is 4-7 with a 4.27 ERA in 16 starts, had allowed 14 runs in 8 1/3 innings in his last two starts, losses to the Pirates and Cardinals. Those two starts came after a 132-pitch complete-game shutout June 16 of the Diamondbacks.

Either Olivo was being a contrarian or wasn't watching the same game as everyone else. Whatever it is, the guy sure did some damage to the Minnesota Twins.

Bruce Chen, who has not pitched in the majors since 2007, will make his Royals debut Saturday with a start at Pittsburgh.

Chen missed last season after undergoing elbow surgery. The Royals will be the 10th team for Chen, who has also pitched for the Braves, Phillies, Mets, Expos, Reds, Astros, Red Sox, Orioles and Rangers. Chen has a 35-37 record with a 4.63 ERA in 242 appearances, including 112 starts.

Chen’s last appearance in the majors was April 20, 2007, with Texas against Oakland in relief. His previous start in the majors was for the Orioles on Aug. 4, 2006, against the Yankees, giving up three earned runs on nine hits in five innings, while walking two and striking out four.
